Free Your Genius: Dr. Nirosha Murugan
TEDx Algoma University
Canada Research Chair and Biophysicist Dr. Nirosha Murugan is a Canada Research Chair and interdisciplinary scientist who uses a top-down approach to understand how cells and tissues communicate with each other and their environment toward healthy form function.

In this TedX talk, Dr. Murugan shares her personal and professional journey of learning to embrace discomfort. Discomfort is a driving force behind adaptation and growth in all biological systems. It arises not only from personal struggles but also from our environment and lack of information in a hostile and often unpredictable world. However, as she points out, it can also be a powerful catalyst for change and progress. Reflecting on critical childhood experiences and the decision to study neuroscience in the North, Dr. Murugan tells stories of being bullied, doubted, and ultimately overcoming challenges and exceeding expectations. She urges everyone to gain the resources, knowledge, and support systems needed to navigate discomfort effectively. Dr. Murugan views her mentorship role as a mechanism to help others become “comfortable with discomfort”, to achieve their goals, and make meaningful contributions to the world.
